(Note: Bio updated February 2020. Nichell Taylor Bryant has resumed using the name Nichell Taylor.)
Nichell Taylor, who has worked successfully in media for more than 30 years, is the founder and consultant team leader of SoulSource Communications.
Before launching SoulSource in 2004 Ms. Taylor, for four years, was national manager of media relations at the New York City-based Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF), the world's largest charitable provider of funds for and advocate of diabetes research. As part of JDRF's award-winning public affairs team recognized by the Public Relations Society of America and the International Association of Business Communicators, Ms. Taylor co-developed, oversaw and executed a wide array of media outreach initiatives designed to increase awareness worldwide about type 1 diabetes and paths toward a cure. More, recently, from 2016 to 2019, Ms. Taylor was senior manager, media relations, at the National Kidney Foundation headquarters in Manhattan, where, as at JDRF, she worked across the organization with the board, senior leadership, and field offices nationwide to help create, promote and implement a plethora of projects to increase awareness about kidney disease.
Ms. Taylor - also a lifelong performing artist/singer of gospel, classical and contemporary music with two, sold-out Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall recitals - takes great pride in using her multiple, tranferrable professional skills to create and/or promote other projects and organizations close to her heart. These include, yet are not limited to, the Dr. Stanley L. Ralph Arts Academy (DSLRAA) on Long Island in New York, and the dynamically diverse and successful "Let Everything That Has Breath Praise the Lord" concerts to benefit the DSLRAA. She also is often enlisted to use her musical gifts and skills to coach aspiring singers, help write or arrange songs, and direct/form choirs and ensembles.
Ms. Taylor's communications career began in 1989 in Atlanta, where she was a freelance writer covering various news and feature stories for the city's historic community newspapers, including The Atlanta Voice, the Atlanta Daily World, The Atlanta Inquirer and the Atlanta University Center Digest. In 1990, she joined the editorial staff of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC), the largest newspaper south of Washington, D.C., and east of Houston. For seven years as a reporter at the AJC, she covered education and other youth- and family-related news and features, breaking hard news, political races, people profiles and the performing arts. Her most treasured assignments: interviewing giants of the modern civil rights movement, including Rosa Parks, Congressman John Lewis, Atlanta Mayor Mayard Jackson.
In 1997, Ms. Taylor jumped the media fence from print journalism to nonprofit media/public relations. Her entry on this side of the industry was working several years as media liaison at New York City's Safe Horizon (formerly Victim Services), the nation's leading nonprofit victim assistance, advocacy, and violence prevention organization. She later became the media specialist for the Long Island-based Institute for Student Achievement, where she coordinated media projects to publicize the organization's trailblazing work with low-performing students in public middle and high schools throughout the country. From there, she moved back to New York City to join JDRF. Further diversifying her resume, for five years, Ms. Taylor also taught Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) and job coached adults and teens with developmental challenges at Abilities! at The Viscardi Center on Long Island.
Throughout her career in journalism and media relations, Ms. Taylor has embraced numerous opportunities to work closely with a veritable 'who's who' of individuals in the public eye, including the political and entertainment worlds.
She is a cum laude graduate of Clark Atlanta University with a bachelor's degree in mass media arts/journalism.
